The Global Network
on Integrated Soil Management for Sustainable Use of Salt Affected Soils
In the light of the related requirements for FAO's assistance to member
governments one of FAO's technical cooperation efforts is the establishment
of this ongoing Global Network on Integrated Soil Management for Sustainable
Use of Salt Affected Soils. Presently 18 countries are participating
in the Network from different regions in the world. Collaborative projects
have been initiated with national institutes in these countries to develop
management practices for sustainable use of salt affected soils. The Network
addresses a wide range of situations such as salinity of swamps and coastal
lands, salinity due to intrusion of sea water, salinity due to soil and
water mismanagement, and irrigation with saline water. Many success stories
were achieved where the locally adopted soil management technologies were
widely applied by farmers through Network efforts. The use of several
salt tolerant plants were demonstrated in various countries and in desert
areas where saline groundwater was applied for irrigation. REGIONAL LIST OF RELATED ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS International FAO
